Home Group Recap: 10/26

Hi Students & Parents,

This week in youth group we talked about prayer, and one thing we made clear: God is not a vending machine. Sometimes we treat prayer that way, putting in a request and expecting exactly what we asked for. But prayer isn’t about getting God to do what we want; it’s about growing closer to God and learning to trust what He wants. We looked at the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6:9-13 and saw that Jesus wasn’t just giving us words to repeat. He was showing us how to have a real conversation with God.

We broke down that conversation into three simple steps.

Rejoice: start by thanking God and recognizing who He is.

Reflect: ask what God wants and invite Him into whatever you’re going through.

Request: bring your needs, and the needs of others, to God, knowing He cares even about the little things.

Prayer doesn’t guarantee we’ll get everything we ask for, but it does give God room to change our hearts and the way we see things.

This week, we challenged students to spend just five minutes a day praying through those three steps: thank God for one thing, tell Him what’s going on and ask for guidance, and ask for something you or someone else needs. Parents, we’d love for you to try it alongside your student, maybe at dinner or before bed. No fancy words required, because God isn’t grading our prayers. Remember: prayer changes things, and prayer typically changes you.

Grace and peace,
-Ben
